I am trying to learn how to speak English with a Russian accent so I can audition well for a play. If someone could give me some examples of what different letters sound like, that would be great! Some sentence examples would be great too (like, a sentence spelled normally and then spelled phonetically the way a Russian would say it).
Thank you!

I am using the "Living Language" program but I can't seem to follow it that closely. Right after the alphabet it takes some large steps that are tough to keep up with. Are there any other programs and/or ways that I can learn Russian?
P.S. I know about Rosetta Stone but it is too expensive

Do practically everyone in the former Soviet Republics speak Russian as a native language or second language?
Is there specific data on the number of people who can speak it?
Thanks.

I am willing to learn Russian and pass the language test, such as Test of Russian as a Foreign Language (TORFL, TRKI) which would allow me to study/work and live in the Federation.

It has to be free and OTI.
I can already read Russian because of another language that I know uses almost the same cyrillic letters.
But where can I learn the actual vocabulary?

I have heard about a language course called The Rosetta Stone that teaches you foreign languages, and from what I have heard, the State Department uses this course to teach their young diplomats foreign languages, and was wondering if there are any Russians on this site that can tell me if this program is good or should I seek out another program to learn Russian?
Thanks
stephane: I also heard that Rice spoke such bad Russian that it made President Putin wince whenever she began speaking to him in what she thinks is Russian.

Do you think the Russian language has a place in the business world?
The Russian economy has developed a lot within the last couple of years, mainly because of the petroleum and the natural gas. However, there is still a lot of corruption and I believe they'll have hardships (the Georgia conflict didn't help them) economically and politically.
Everybody speaks English nowadays, but it seems that the Russians aren't that eager to learn it.

My co worker claims Russian is the hardest language for a native English speaker to learn. I don't think so. I thought it would be Chinese.

I'm learning Russian and am practicing translating English into Russian. However, I'm having trouble with some of the rules of pronunciation. I know that O stressed is a short O sound, and unstressed it is A. But when do I know when it is stressed or unstressed? As in the case of words such as Wolf- волк. Is is pronounced Volk, or Valk?

Can someone please translate this to the word..

I would love to learn but sadly there is nowhere in my area that teaches Russian. I looked at Rosetta Stone but I'm not sure if I would like that format of learning very much. I want to completely understand what I am saying and I'd like to actually be able to learn the Cyrillic alphabet too. Any suggestions?

And if anyone has a minor or major in it, how hard is it to learn??
Russian has always interested me, and I'm just dying to learn it, I don't know why, it's just a feeling i've always had.
Is there any significance with a minor, or even a major, in Russian language and literature? or whatever they call the major..
Thanks!

I am trying to learn Russian on my own and I was wondering if there is any good websites to learn Russian where you can hear the words being said. I have tried learning by the sites that have 'this is how it is said' next to it, but then I hear the words and I am not saying them the right way. I hope that made sence xD. Thanks!

Can Russian be written using English characters? I tried learning how to speak/write Russian for a while and the characters were giving me a hard time. I mean I see Russian names and stuff on TV and they are not using those characters. So maybe I could learn it without using them?

Note: i looked in on the Rosetta Stone program and it was way to much for me. so...any ideas??

I'll be going to college next year and taking a language and history class, but if anyone knows any other opportunities to learn Russian faster (I hear the Rosetta Stone programs are good) and especially to visit Russia, please let me know. Are there any summer camps where I could work, or internships for Americans? I won't begin learning the language until January, so I certainly won't be that good.

I've been wondering this for years, Polish is easy, but Russian takes tongue and throat work. Chinese is tonal, writing system is difficult, the pronunciation though is somewhat easy, but thats my opinion. Do you agree that Russian is the hardest language. I'm asking those who have experiences with languages or regular people who think they can answer this question.
