I have decided to learn Russian, and was wondering exactly what I'm in for here... can anyone share their experiences?

Specifically, how different is Russian grammar compared to English and to Latin based languages (I've studied French and Spanish)? ...I was teaching myself Japanese a while ago, and was doing pretty well with it. How difficult is Russian compared to Japanese?

Any help is appreciated!

Original writing format and pronunciation would be greatly appreciated.

I've read several questions and answers about Chinese v. Russian, but I'm still unsure. I'd like to learn Russian in particular because I love to read, and some of my favorite books were originally Russian. But I also know that Chinese is the bigger business language, and if you're going to do that, Mandarin is the way to go. Trying to exclude China's advantage in that area, which is the better choice?

Can anyone speak Russian fluently?

A few classmates and I are planning on tricking out our student teacher in Science by speaking various languages. I took Russian, but I also accept Swedish. The class is Earth Science, if that helps you pick out some phrases. We are working on Chemistry. Thanks!

How hard is it to learn Russian?

I really want to learn how to speak Russian, I really like the language and the accent, and I also plan on visiting Russia after I graduate. Is it a hard language to learn compared to Spanish? Also, what would be a good way to learn it?

How do you write Sophia in Russian?

I was wondering if anyone could write my name, Sophia, in Russian.

I'm trying to brush up on my Russian (which I studied years ago), and I can read my Cyrillic fine, but I never fully understood what this letter 'Ь' is for.

It shows up in a lot of Russian vocabulary and I don't know how to pronounce it! I usually end up ignoring it, but it becomes a difficulty in spelling Russian words out because I often forget the soft sign.

What purpose does this letter serve? :)

I was watching a news clip of the Chinese president being spoken to in Russian by someone but couldn't see if there was an interpreter. Does anyone know if he speaks Russian?
Also, is the US President the only one in the world who is not fluent in a second language?
calm down Ben I never said he's required to know more than one. RE-read my question.

So I was wondering how my name, Auriana, would be written in Russian. It is pronounced Or-ee-anna. Would it be something like this?

I just want to know if there is a way for me to speak Russian accurately even though I can't roll my 'r's. I know in Spanish you can just extend your 'r's for the most part.

I mean, if the language or an education aren't an issue, are there any specific topics and subjects normal for the Western Women which Russian women don't find interesting? besides their own kids (all women find that subject the most important) are there any specific topics and subjects they prefer to talk about?
Any kind of movies they never watch?
Any kind of music they never listen to?
Amy kind of other themes they aren't interested in, when they live abroad, in the Western Europe or the Northern America?

Where can I learn Russian online for free?

I really want to learn Russian, including how to write it. Do you know any good places to learn it for free online? I want it to be as in-depth as possible.

I remember reading a Russian quote about unwanted guests that stop to talk and won't leave. It compares the bleakest landscape of the Russian steppe with the bleak feelings of an accidental host when something like this happens. It might have been Chekhov who said it, or some other Russian author.

How difficult is it to learn Russian?

I took a few years of German in high school and it came easily to me. I think Russian is really awesome and would like to learn it, but because it has such a different alphabet, etc, I'm afraid it will be way too hard. How hard is it to learn, pronunciation-wise, grammar-wise, etc, and what would be an efficient way of learning it?

Well I'm going into the army and I want to study the Russian language. I want to be able to read, write and speak fluent Russian. So does the army offer the ability to take a Russian language course or something similar?

How can I learn to speak Russian?

I'm fourteen years old and my school only offers Spanish and French as second languages, but I'd really love to learn Russian. Is there any possible way that I could learn a new language by myself using only resources I can provide for myself? Where do I start?
Also, I'm already taking Spanish as a second language because it's required to take at least one foreign language. Will this make learning Russian more difficult because I'm learning two languages at once?

I would like to talk to a marine who either was or still is a Russian Linguist. I have some questions about the classes and such. Thanks!
