To start typing in Russian on your computer you will need to get Russian Keyboard/Russian Cyrillic Stickers. They are inexpensive, easy-to-apply and you can continue using your present keyboard: http://primelanguageservices.com/learnrussian.html
Then you will need to activate Cyrillic (Russian) capabilities on your computer.
Instructions for Windows XP:
• Click on the Start button at the bottom left corner of your screen. On the resulting right menu, click on Settings and choose Control Panel option.
• In the Control Panel, choose Regional and Language Options.
• Choose Languages Option tab and click on the Details button.
• Click on "Add" in the resulting dialog.
• In the Input Language dialog dropdown box, choose the language you wish to add (in this case Russian or Cyrillic), and click "OK" twice.
• In your System Tray (bottom right corner of your screen), you should see an indication of your current language. You can now switch between languages by pressing Alt+Shift. The icon will change to reflect the language chosen.
I’m not sure if you can type full reports, but I found a virtual cyrillic keyboard.
Here’s the link:
http://winrus.com/screen_e.htm
Go to http://www.translit.ru, and you will be able to type what the word sounds like with latin letters, which will be converted to russian words
You do not need to download any ‘typewriter’ and also you should not go to sites like translit.ru – you already know how to write in _Cyrillic_ – on paper,- so you do NOT need to learn _new_ way of getting Cyrillic offered on translit.ru:
instead of immediately writing in Cyrillic they offer people to write __Latin Combinations__ (!) like ’sch’ or ‘zh’ and then they "convert" those combinations (successfully or often not) to Cyrillic – it’s a last century very outdated and _not normal_ way…
Normal way for any language – it’s a way in which _system keyboard_ works – with "RU" mode or "EN" mode or "FR" mode, etc.
It’s just technology was limited back in 1995-99 and people used that strange "combinations with guessing" way og getting Cyrillic (Russian) by inputing unusual and not normal things like
"obschestvennyj"
No need to use such abnormal way nowadays – thanks to the progress in computer technologies!

Here are your _normal_ choices as you already got used to write Cyrillic (on paper):
Choice 1.
Buy stickers as it was suggested and learn _layout_ of Russian letters used in Russia, here is its picture:
http://winrus.com/std_ru.gif
But it would take you some significant amount of time, because you will need to learn where to loook (even with stickers) for Russian letters:
- Russian ‘A’ – where Latin ‘F’
- Russian ‘T’ – where Latin ‘N’
- etc.
Choice 2. It’s what many people otside Russia do (and me) – and it’s suggested – as a choice equla to "Russia-internal" layout – by http://AATSEEL.org -
write using so called Phonetic layout, when, with Russian mode of keyboard ("RU"):
- Russian ‘A’ – where Latin ‘A’
- Russian ‘T’ – where Latin ‘T’
- O-O, E-E, …,Б-B, Д-D, Ф-F,…
Windows (easy to see in Control Panel) itself offers users to add and use several different _layouts_ for a language…
The quality of Russian text is NOT affected by the way person types and _layout_ used; it’s the same in the following 3 cases:
– write Russian on a piece of paper
– write on computer with "Russia-internal" layout
– write on computer with Phonetic layout
The instruction for Russian keyboard activation (system-based typing in "RU" mode) under non-Russian Windows (by Windows version – XP or Vista or 2003 or 2000, etc.) for BOTH "Russia-internal" layout and Phonetic layout cab be found in the section
"Typing Russian on any keyboard" on http://WinRus.com
**********
On the other hand, if it’s a one-time job, you do not need to setup your system and can type – in the same "system keyboard" mode – with either "Russia-interna" or Phonetic layout – on the Virtual Keyboard site already mentioned above -
http://winrus.com/screen.htm = http://porusski.net -
that Vistual Keyboard fully imulates regular (normal!) "system based input) – with keyboard (not mosue) and in the same regime as people type while system is in "RU" mode
