There are a few things that are in your favor if you would like to study Russian: first, that you already speak more than one language. It always gets easier to learn a new language after you already know more than one language.
Second, that you have desire to learn Russian. Desire is a great motivator. Motivator is like an engine to a car that keeps it going.
Third, there are a lot of similarities among Indo-European languages, even among the languages that belong to different language groups. There are a lot of similar root words and grammar structures.
Slavic/Russian pronunciation is a little different. But it’s the same regarding any other language. For foreign speakers usually it’s the hardest to understand structure of cases and verbs. However, there are certain ways a teacher can help you to get it down.
Make sure that you get as much practice as you possibly can. It will help you to get it down and keep it. If you can, plan a longer trip to a country where you can be exposed to speaking Russian, or take a summer school. It will make a big difference.
It is definitely hard to determine how long time it might take for you to learn it. There are too many variations to determine it.
A person who knows at least 2 foreign languages doesn’t face problems with the new ones. Russian is my mother tongue, but I think It’s not so easy to learn, as right now I attend courses of how to teach foreigners Russian. Poor learners…:)))
Moreover, it much depends on the person, his motivation. I’m studying French for 4 years (too long) and I’m not a fluent speaker.
That’s right. It isn’t an easy language beacause of its complicated system of declension and verb conjugation as it is a Slavic language like Polish or Croatian. In Russian there are 6 cases. But it all depends on you. I’ve been learning Russian for two years. But for me it is easier to learn Russian because the two languages show many similarities regarding the structure of the language. But remember that over 100 millions people speak Russian. Cheer up! If you really get down to it, you can make it!
