How long to learn fluent Russian?
Hello!
привет!
I was wondering how long approximately it would take me as an absolute beginner to learn russian. in a couple of months i will be living in russia for approximately 2 years as i am doing my studies out there. I will also be taking russian lessons at the school whilst there and studying in my free time. i'll have people living with me who are native russian speakers too. With this in mind how long do you think it will take me

Well, it all really depends on how hard you’ll study and put the russian to use. I was reading in a book that:
"… the U.S government experience indicates that whereas it might take a speaker of English approximately six months of full-time language study to achieve professional proficiency in speaking French, Spanish, Italian, or Portuguese, it will take a year in RUSSIAN, Czech, or Polish, and two years in Arabic, Japanese, or Korean…"
-Joan Rubin, How to be a More Successful Language Learner.
but it depends on how often you use it and the level of which you retain.
Well, learning how to speak won’t take that long, but learning Russian’s grammar would take awhile. However, it really depends on how well your retention is, and how often you study and apply what you’ve learned. Since you’ll actually be in Russia for awhile, you’ll be able to apply what you’ve learned on a daily basis, and you’ll be housed with native speakers. I’d guess around 2 years or more to be fluent in reading and writing.
