to become fluent in a language, it can take on average 5 years of regular practice and learning. I taught myself basic russian with a teach yourself russian course by Daphne West. My advice is to learn the cyrillic alphabet and gradually work through vocabulary, word of caution, russian uses a very complex case system that you would have not come across in spanish or Portuguese. For these, i would research and practice them until you know how they work.
Good luck
It’s a real language, so if you take classes (not live among russians) it will take several years, maybe a year less if you learn Esperanto for a year first.
From what I hear on Y!A, RS isn’t worth the price. Things you pick up from the library, childrens books/videos (with decent subtitles) would be better
Rosetta Stone isn’t the best for learning Russian. As for a specific program, something from the library will work as long as it is teaching you the grammar and not just phrases to memorize. It might be difficult to pronounce at first, but keep trying and very soon everything will start to make sense and you will have an intuition for pronunciation. Try to find children’s books in Russian, for they will be easier to read.
One could probably learn Russian grammar and some vocab in a year or less and be able to speak a bit conversationally, but it will take years of practice to became a really good speaker.
