According to the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California, Russian language is classified as a level III language in terms of learning difficulty for native English speakers, requiring approximately 780 hours of immersion instruction to achieve intermediate fluency. It is also regarded by the United States Intelligence Community as a "hard target" language, due to both its difficulty to master for English speakers as well as due to its critical role in American world policy.
Based on my experience as a teacher, I can tell you that this varies. If you have good ear for languages, are hard working and am willing to spend enough time on studying the language, you can become fluent within 2 years.
Prime Language Services (http://primelanguageservices.com/learnrussian.html) teaches Russian live online, when you see, hear and talk with the teacher on webcam. They also offer trial lesson for free, so you can actually take it, learn some Russian and see for yourself if Russian Language is difficult for you: http://primelanguageservices.com/freerussianlesson.html
Russian would be harder to learn, mainly because it is so different from other languages… Like if you wanted to learn how to speak fluently in Italian or French it would be a lot easier…
It took me four years to speak fluently in Russian and that’s with grammar and so forth…. Maybe it will take you less… But it took me 1 1/2/ years to speak fluently in Romanian, which is similar to Italian and Spanish but that’s because I lived there.
Good Luck!!!! =)
Probably longer. Russian is a category 3 language so it will probably be harder. English and German are category 2 languages and spanish is a category 1. 1 being the easiest languages to learn and 5 being the most difficult to learn.Going from spanish to russian will be a big adjustment since spanish is considered one of the easiest. You’d have an easier time learning another category 1 language like portuguese, french or italian and those are similar to spanish.I read that russian could need 1100 hours of classwork.
