I am looking to know if I need a specific computer program to write Russian on the computer. I have a slandered American keyboard. Can XP change the language settings? If so how would I do this?

Hi Lauren,
Follow the instructions above for enabling the language bar in XP and typing in Cyrillic.
However, you’ll need a special keyboard with the Russian letters marked or you’ll just be guessing which key means what!
I have the language bar enabled Russian but I never use it.
Instead I use a virtual Russian keyboard at:

Very easy to use, just copy and paste into your document.
If you want general tips on the Russian alphabet (with sound) then check out:

Hope that helps!

you need to install russian language or a keyboard software of russian lang into your computer to obtain the cyrillic alphabet.
You don’t need a special program to write in Russian (Cyrillic alphabet) on the PC. But you have to add/install the Russian alphabet and language on it. (in WinXP, from control panel, languages…).
Pay attention to the fact that Russian keyboard is not of a QWERTY or QWERTZ or even AZERTY type… it’s totally different!
A simple way, just for answering in forums, emails and such (through your browser) is to install the FireFox browser and the "Russ Key" add-on (or some other similar > to translit, to Cyrillic). Or use this site:
http://www.translit.ru/
There are also programs that "translates" the standard (US) keyboard input to Russian :
http://www.geocities.com/NapaValley/Vineyard/5599/Translit/
http://www.avmcs.com/public/tc.htm
and you can try to find more…
Go to "Control Panel" then click on "Regional and Language Options"
Once you open the options go to "Languages" and click where you see "Details…"
When it opens click on "Add…"
There you’re able to change the language and keyboard language to Russian or any other language on to your computer & keyboard!
If you don’t have Russian language installed on your computer just go to a site on the internet where they use Russian sylliables and install Russian language on to your computer!
