I want my daughter to speak English and Russian?

My husband is from US, I am from Russia, and we are moving back to Russia. I gave birth to a baby girl 2 months ago. I currently speak in Russian to her, my husband speaks in English to her. Is this bad? Could it effect her learning?

It will benefit her learning. A child, until roughly 1 year of age, can pick up the sounds of every language on earth. This first year sets which language the child is native to, so if you speak both, she will be native in both. You need to speak both to her, and once she goes to school, you can switch to English at home to keep her native in it (just remember to teach her to write in English).

no, it will actually help her learning. children who know 2 languages usually do far better than those who dont. the more languages the better.

no you should always start when they are young. its easier for them to comprehend and they learn faster. i know 2 languages from when i was small.

I was born in New Zealand, my mother was chinese and my father was european.
Through out my entire childhood and teenage life I’ve learned both chinese and english, and now Im in highschool. But the extra language skill I have gained from this has benefitted me alot. It was easier for me to find a part time job involving muilti-languages and I could get more school exam marks from the extra language exam papers I was doing.
So yea it’s NEVER bad for someone to learn something new. The human brain can learn as much things as it can. Especially learning language during childhood. Once you grow up it’s much harder to remember things when learning new words etc.
If you are going to live in Russia, speak English in the home. She will pick up Russian when she goes to school.
If you decide to remain in the United States, speak Russian at home and she will pick up English at school.
Speaking to her right now in two languages will be confusing to her and she will not know how to respond. More than likely, she’d mix the two to satisfy both languages.
I agree with the Amazing Dude. Speak both languages, she’ll pick them up quickly and will not be confused.
My wife spoke FOUR languages growing up (three at home plus one in the community), and it didn’t mess her up at all. As a matter of fact, it made it easier for her to learn other languages.
The one thing that they say is that if a child is taught two languages from birth, they will be slow to talk. This isn’t a bad thing–it’s like they have to figure out which words go with which, and it takes a little longer for them to figure out with two. You have to be aware of that so you don’t panic and think that she’s slow and panic. It’s natural, healthy, and, really, the way all kids should be brought up.
