There are so many around where I live, but I would like to suprise them by understanding what they are saying (thick accent) and being able to communicate with them in their native tongue. (Ukrainian) I hear it is quite hard for american's to learn, but I can speak some Japanese/German (pretty hard too, lol).

First, you need to decide if you are going to learn Russian, or Ukrainian. Russian is the "native tongue" of most Ukrainians born before 1991. You will find that younger Ukrainians, and many older Western Ukrainians, will claim Ukrainian as their "native tongue", but it is likely they speak Russian as well (if not better).
Personally, I find Russian much more helpful in Ukraine.
That said, try the Pimsleur basic course, or http://www.byki.com for a free "basic" course. If you want to do more, I would get a language tutor.
Go to a torrent website
Search Pimsleur Russian.
You will be speaking in no time.
I definetly agree, decide if you want to learn Russian or Ukrainian, even though they sound alike, and when reading Ukrainian you can read the Russian, they are 2 separate languages. I would compare them to "Mexican Spanish" and "Spain’s Spanish" Russian would be more helpful to learn. You can try Rosetta stone. There are even websites online that will teach Russian. You just have to look. I think once you have mastered the Cyrillic alphabet, you will have an easy time learning the vocabulary. I think people say its hard because of the alphabet.
Hey, you can drop me a message if interested in studying Russian, I am located in Moscow and can give as much lessions as needed through skype or any other online means suitable for you. Price negotiable.
And of course I encourage to take additional courses as described above to improve language skills much quicker.
