Yes, it is possible if you work hard. If you are worried about it just learn one language first and then the other.
Russian is probably difficult, but I think people overestimate how hard it is to learn a new writing system. I am learning Chinese right now and while learning new characters takes work, it is really not that bad. Nor would I label it the hardest thing I’ve ever done. It is just memorization.
I’m sure you’ll be able to learn the Cyrillic alphabet if you’re really determined to.
There are some crazy polygots out there that have learned 20 or more languages. So I’m sure you’ll be able to reach your goal :].
If you were to start with one or the other due to ease of learning, than I would recommend Portuguese. It would seem a lot closer to English and French than Russian would. Russian comes from a very different branch of the language tree, and the grammar and word formation would seem quite different. That is not, to say, that it is not a great language to learn. I learned Russian, and I am beginning to learn Brazilian Portuguese through Pimsleur.
It all depends on your goal. If you want to learn it quickly, go with Portuguese. If you want to open a whole new branch of languages to your world, go with Russian. Yes, it is a difficult language to learn and master, but you will a get to a point, as with most languages, where it will all just snap into place, and from there it’s all about enriching knowledge and vocabulary. From there, you can being seeing familiar words in Ukrainian, Polish, Czech, Serbo-Croatian, etc.
When it is a new language, which hasn’t been taught from birth, and you aren’t engrossed in the culture, it is very difficult to completely learn a language, as there are many nuances, colloquialisms, slang, humor, etc. that are difficult to understand and pick up. But for strict communications…yes, it is an attainable goal to learn both.
Good for you!!I’m Brazilian and I bet soon we’ll be able to speak in Portuguese.
All the very best.
