Russian pronunciation?

I'm learning Russian and am practicing translating English into Russian. However, I'm having trouble with some of the rules of pronunciation. I know that O stressed is a short O sound, and unstressed it is A. But when do I know when it is stressed or unstressed? As in the case of words such as Wolf- волк. Is is pronounced Volk, or Valk?

try forvo there is a russian section here: http://forvo.com/languages/ru/
If it is a 1 syllable word the O is (almost) stressed. So it is Volk. Longer words will have the stress marked in the dictionary.
(There are a few exceptions when a 1 syllable word is part of a longer expression i.e. до свидания where the o is unstressed)
