I already speak Japanese fluently and I want to pick up another foreign language to fluency level.
Which language would be more useful in the future? Chinese or Russian?
Thanks for your input everyone! I appreciate your responses.
Louis the Linguist: I "picked up" Japanese and I know the effort involved. I've studied the language for several years including spending a couple years in the country. I'm prepared to study another language for years and live in that country for a couple years as well. Don't patronize me!

So, this is going to be my 3rd foreign language to learn and I am only a teen so I am only looking for the basics and possibly a little farther after the basics. I know some websites like Livemocha.com that work great but I starts out with stuff like how to say Man and Women and then put sentences together and doesn't even go over the alphabet or language rules! So it would be awesome if you all could help with by listing some websites and some interesting techniques that could help me learn Russian! Thanks

What kind of dictionary do I need for TORFL (Test of Russian as a Foreign Language) Exam? Do I need a portable one or a really big one with all of the words?

I want to learn how to speak Russian or Arabic for when I apply for a federal position they will more likely want me then somebody without a foreign language. I have two problems, one I do not know if I will learn how to speak it well enough to use. Two I do not know if the feds want people to minor or major in a foreign language and I do not want to destroy my GPA. I am majoring in criminal justice ( I know but I really like it )
What do you think I should do? I really want to look good when I apply to a federal agency.
Fyi- Police Explorer- Clean record- 19 years old- Second semester freshman in college
CITICOP...I thought about Rosetta Stone. Would a federal agency accept that or like that even though its not from a college?
Alright thanks I read up on it after you mentioned it was hard and thats alot of what I am reading...how hard it is.

I'd really love to learn a little bit of Russian. It is a very interesting language to me, and I need a foreign language credit to graduate. How would I take it online? The only foreign language my school offers is Spanish because I live in southern Arizona. Spanish doesn't even seem like a foreign language anymore because of the immigration.

I'm fourteen years old and my school only offers Spanish and French as second languages, but I'd really love to learn Russian. Is there any possible way that I could learn a new language by myself using only resources I can provide for myself? Where do I start?
Also, I'm already taking Spanish as a second language because it's required to take at least one foreign language. Will this make learning Russian more difficult because I'm learning two languages at once?

I'm trying to find out what the most common foreign language (not Russian) taught in Russia is, and what is the main foreign language taught - they might not be the same.
I was thinking English, but maybe German or other European language

I've recently become interested in learning the russian language. The only problem is that I've no idea which organisations/schools offer russian as a foreign language, so right now I'm trying to teach myself using internet and audio clips. I really want a tutor to teach me the language properly in person so that I'll be able to learn it faster instead of trying to figure out how the language and various variations to pronounciations/sentence structures work on my own. The 3rd language centres over here don't offer russian as a foreign language, and it's really hard to find russians in singapore. I'm currently in the music conservatory at NUS, and I only know 2 russian teachers of mine. But it's kind of hard to ask them for proper russian lessons in the conservatory when my timetable is getting fuller by the semesters. Plus they aren't trained in teaching languages.
Does anyone know where I can go for proper russian lessons, not counting internet, books or going to russia?

I'm thinking about taking a Russian or German class as my foreign language for school. I just wanted to know if any experts can tell me which one is easier to learn?

I was surprised to read on some forum dedicated to Russian as foreign language talks about how ppl want to learn it, how beautiful it is. I think it's a challenge cause Russian is or thought to be one of the hardest languages.

is it sensible for me, an English native speaker, to learn a difficult language like Russian as my first foreign language. I have a a lot of interest in this language, but I feel it may be too much to cope with.

I've noticed that my biggest problem with learning Russian has been my inability to remember vocabulary. I can remember (most of) the rules for which gender/case/tense gets what ending, but I spend far too much time looking up words in a dictionary.
Does anyone have any recommendations for effective ways to learn foreign language (particularly Russian) vocabulary? I'm well aware that there's no "shortcut" to learning a language, but maybe some of you have some useful suggestions!
Thanks a lot!

I am willing to learn Russian and pass the language test, such as Test of Russian as a Foreign Language (TORFL, TRKI) which would allow me to study/work and live in the Federation.
