I'm very interested in learning Russian but because I don't have a formal teacher I would know where to start. My school only offers French Spanish and Japanese taking French not my choice. Are there any beginner guides I can use so that I will know how long I should spend on a topic.

I'm thinking of learning Russian for fun, I know it's not going to be easy but I've been trying to roll my R's and I just can't do it. Can I still learn and will I still be understood even though I can't?

The website, Deutsche Welle ("German World") is an excellent website for learning German, because they have, among other things, the ability to listen to slowly-spoken German lessons. It is great. Does anyone know of such a website for learning Russian? There are, of course, Russian radio stations, but they speak too quickly for me to understand, so I am looking for a place where I can hear it spoken more slowly.

Besides learning Russian, I heard I should learn French. French was used primarily during the eighteenth century so I was just wondering if it would be a good idea. Thanks!

I've noticed that my biggest problem with learning Russian has been my inability to remember vocabulary. I can remember (most of) the rules for which gender/case/tense gets what ending, but I spend far too much time looking up words in a dictionary.
Does anyone have any recommendations for effective ways to learn foreign language (particularly Russian) vocabulary? I'm well aware that there's no "shortcut" to learning a language, but maybe some of you have some useful suggestions!
Thanks a lot!
