Well I've been learning Russian for a while now but I don't know where to look to find advanced phrases other than the basics phrases that are online and in books and don't know how to practise Russian, any ideas?

I've tried Rosetta Stone but I found it a little too advanced, too quickly! I know my alphabet, basic phrases etc.

Thanks in advance, seriously!

- how to ask forgiveness for something/formally apologize
- "academic performance"
- "to be diagnosed with an illness"
- "to be capable of something"
- "to ask someone to do something"

Me and a few friends have recently started learning russian. One friend has sent a text to the rest of us and he's blatantly used popular phrases, so I'd like to text some back with a translation of the phrase in the title as a joke.

Thanks for the help!

Oh, also it'll have to be in english letters, God help my phone's predictive text if I dare venture into the Russian letters with it!

Learning to read, write and speak in Russian…?

Okay, my husband is Russian (born in Russia and lived there until he was 9 years old, then moved to Brooklyn NY) and I really want to learn how to speak Russian! I need to learn how to speak Russian! My mother-in-law speaks English, but doesn't like to, and my husband's grandmother, who he is very close with, doesn't speak English at all! Not to mention, when we have children it is extremely important to me for them to be able to learn Russian and English starting at a young age. I love the Russian culture, I love Russian food, the music, the language, the people in general, etc. And I want our children to know all about where their dad (and his side of the family) is from, and their culture.

So, I can actually understand a decent amount of Russian (I've been around it for 4 years). I don't understand enough though! I can catch enough words when someone is speaking Russian to know basically what they are talking about. And I can say really simple things in Russian like, thank you, please, I love you, wife, yes, no, home, money, hello, good bye, good, left, right, straight, sit, a few bad words, etc. I have also memorized the Russian alphabet. I feel stupid saying Russian words though because I feel like I don't say them right, and I think that's one of my biggest problems. It's not like I'm just learning Russian and I'm not ever really going to use it, I'm around more people that are from Russia than not, so nothing I say is going to sound right!

Okay, so now that I have written a novel for what should have been just a simple question, I need to know Russian words and phrases that I will use a lot. I guess things that are commonly said. I have looked all over the internet and have found some good stuff, but it's all online lessons, and I need something I can print out. I don't need online lessons, I have a Russian husband to help me pronounce things if I need help, but I need to be able to learn whatever I can on my own so I'm not bothering my husband constantly. So, if you know of any websites that have commonly used, need-to-know, but not too complicated, Russian words, phrases, sentences, etc, please post the link for me. It also needs to be something that is set up where I can print it out. Or, I guess if you are Russian or speak Russian, can you think of any words, phrases, sentences that I would need to know (as a beginner) that you could tell me on here? If so, I'd need you to write it in Russian and in English though please.

Okay, sorry this was so long, but any help would be greatly appreciated!

спасибо

Can anyone speak Russian fluently?

A few classmates and I are planning on tricking out our student teacher in Science by speaking various languages. I took Russian, but I also accept Swedish. The class is Earth Science, if that helps you pick out some phrases. We are working on Chemistry. Thanks!

what would be the best way to learn russian?

i am very interested in becoming fluent in many languages.
i am only in high school , and have taken 5 levels of spanish, and 2 of french, however i have met some natives of russia and their culture and language really interests me, so i would like to learn russian, and later in college, german.
is there a particular program, book, anything that would be good to learn russian?
of course i could ask my russian co workers how to say certain phrases,or if i have specific questions, but i want to learn the language! how should i start?

Where would be a good place to learn Russian online?

Just one thing, in that this should not teach in the "memorize phrases" way like Rosetta Stone would.

Need help with an English to Russian translation?

I'm writing a story. I don't have all the phrases the one character is going to say to the other, but he's often going to call her "Little one" or "Little bit" due to her small size. I need it in English characters though so I can type it up. Also if you know of any websites that do an English to Russian translation in English characters I'd appreciate it, though I know those will just be a guideline.

I'm trying to learn Russian, but as its not a popular language to learn in the States I can't find any community classes and so I've resorted to audios and books. I don't want to waste money on items that will only teach me how to speak necessary phrases for travel, I want to know the entire language; any suggestions?

Pretty self explanatory, If I want to try to teach myself Russian, should I memorize alphabet and sounds or should I start by learning different words and phrases?
Thank you everyone! I will definitely start on the alphabet. And movies and music are great ideas for when I learn more. Thank you again!
