Teaching myself to speak Russian…?

I'm teaching myself to speak Russian by the use of online courses, and I have a few questions about the Russian alphabet.
a) Could someone explain the "signs"? (They look a little like b's.)
b) Can you check if you wrote a word down right somewhere?
Thanks for your help!

a). The little "b" is called a "meeyakiznak" it signifies a soft consonant sound of the consonant it follows.
I don’t, however recommend teaching yourself Russian. It is an extremely difficult language to learn if you don’t have anyone to help you. I took three years of Russian in college, and I still don’t know what I’m talking about.
b). http://www.freetranslation.com
and google has a translater as well.
