I'm thinking about taking a Russian or German class as my foreign language for school. I just wanted to know if any experts can tell me which one is easier to learn?

I took Russian in College and I found it to be super easy. I also lived in Germany for a month before I went to college and I picked up the language quite fast (within one week) but I did not know how to read or write German.
I think if you can get over the different alphabet, Russian is quite easy although if you are taking as your language requirement, I must warn you that the vocabulary gets way more difficult in the second semester of Russian; The words become longer but the grammar is still relatively easy.
On the other hand, I find German easier to learn by ear because the English language borrows a lot of its vocabulary from German. However, a friend of mine who was a German major in College admitted that German reading & writing is VERY difficult; German combines words making them really long and hard to pronounce. She also said the grammar was incredibly difficult unlike Russian. Today she is a professor…of Russian.
So..for the total College requirement (reading, writing, speaking) I’d say Russian is the way to go.
To get a sample of learning the different languages, I suggest you go to http://www.beforeyouknowit.com , a website that starts you off with learning new languages..it’s says you should buy the program but they do have a "baby" program that’s free. It really gives you a feeling for whatever language you want to learn.
You can temporarily download the language you are interested in from that site and give it a try. You’ll probably be able to make a better choice for yourself after you take a spin through Before You Know It.
Best of Luck!
I have learned 5 different languages including German, and I have to admit, German was the easiest to remember and catch on to…I have never taken Russian (yet!), but it does have a slightly different alphabet, which could hinder the learning process. Plus, Germans are more fun to talk to when you get proficient in the language!
German is arguably the hardest language to learn.
You’re in TOTAL OPPOSITES. Russian is SUPER easy, German is SUPER difficult.
People get thrown off of Russian because of the alphabet, but it’s really a very easy class. I say go with Russian!
Russian. Especially since German is based on Primitive Germanic, the same as English, so it easier for us English-speakers to learn it.
I was interested in learning both German and Russian since middle school. I ended up studying German (post-college) so my response is in that perspective. . .
I would say Russian is harder (and I’ve been told that as well) and involves a different alphabet.. There are many similar words in English with roots in German which makes the learning process easier, however grammar is sehr schwer! (difficult)
I personally love German the more I learn it. It’s a great language and beautiful for its logic.
Good luck.
