I'm attempting to learn Russian. I know a few words here and there and some of the alphabet, but what would be the easiest way to teach myself without purchasing a program like Rosetta Stone? Thank you very much.

1. Be born in Russia.
if you failed at step one you can try doing what the person above me said. Learn the russian alphabet. Learn the basic nouns, verbs and conjications. And then try to think in Russian as much as possible. When you’re doing something boring describe the objects or simple actions you see in russian.
Also put labels on things in your house of what they are called in russian. This helped me and my mom learn english when we moved here and now i’m doing it with french. The hardest part is the billions of conjigations that we have in russian. but once you memorise them, just keep using them in your head and then it will be just a matter of improting it.
Then you can get into fun stuff like russian movies & music.
My ex step dad learned russian with Rosetta Stone and he… i guess thought it was good. One of the russian lessons included the sentance "мужчина бросает мальчика" or "muchina brosaet mal’chika" or "man throws boy" ….. usefull for renting hotel rooms in russia..

Go to Russia, and live there for a couple of years.
If you don’t have time to do that, why pay for RS? You can get good lessons on Livemocha.com. You might want to famiiliarize yourself with the alphabet…there are sites for that…Wikipedia has one. Or just search "Russian alphabet", or "cyrillic alphabet".
