I studied Russian on my own in HS, and now I just finished my first semester of it at university. The thing that still puts me ahead of the rest of the people in my class is that I can read it! 90% of the people in my class cannot hardly read Russian at all (because they never study–not because it’s that hard). So my advice is learn the alphabet and how to pronounce it.
Here is a link that should help you.

Reading while listening to a native speaker talk is one of the best ways to learn on your own (the best way of course is by a private tutor).
Livemocha.com isn’t a bad site either. i’m using it for Mandarin right now.
Just start learning the kirillitsa.Their alfabet. Its totally different and really really hard to learn. If you get a head start on that, you will cruise in the class.
