I studied Russian on my own in HS, and now I just finished my first semester of it at university. The thing that still puts me ahead of the rest of the people in my class is that I can read it! 90% of the people in my class cannot hardly read Russian at all (because they never study--not because it's that hard). So my advice is learn the alphabet and how to pronounce it.

Here is a link that should help you.

Reading while listening to a native speaker talk is one of the best ways to learn on your own (the best way of course is by a private tutor).

Livemocha.com isn't a bad site either. i'm using it for Mandarin right now.
