Why do two million Americans speak Russian?
Yesterday, I happened to see a sentence in my English textbook.
"There are also two million Russian speakers in the USA, including 600,000 in New York!" I was wondering why does Russian so popular in the US. Is there something to do with the large number of immigrants from Russia to America. But shouldn't it be Chinese?
In fact, I have began wondering it since I saw an advertisement slogan written in Russian in an American grocery in the movie"Wanted". So I want to ask Americans about my doubt.
Thank you!

Yes, indeed, the number of people who speak Russian in America has everything to do with the number of immigrants living here, who come from Russia. They do not speak Chinese because they did not come from China. There are a large number of people in America who do speak Chinese, however. They speak Chinese (various different dialects) because they come from China. If you want to know how many, there are sites on the internet (and Google and Wikipedia are two of these, but there are others) which can provide the latest statistics. Far more people in this country speak Spanish, either as a first or second language, as a great many come from countries where that is the native tongue, such as Mexico, Costa Rica, Argentina, Chile, and the American territory of Puerto Rico, among many others. There are also people from many other countries, who speak many other native languages who live here, from all the continents of the world. In addition, there are Native Americans who speak various Native American languages. The largest number of these are the Navaho, but there are all Hopi, Zuni, Cherokee, Potawatomi, and many others. Some of these people also speak English and some do not. I teach English as a second language and I see some of them in my classes. Most are highly motivated to learn English, but find it very difficult. They are typically much better students than were my native English speakers in college classes, for some reason. I wonder why that is?
Russian immigants. Many are Jewish and settled in New York and Chicago.
Chinese is also spoken by many immigrants. As is Arabic, Spanish, French and many other language.
Spanish is the second most spoken language in the United states.
If there was a help wanted sign in a movie in Russian then it was set in an area that had a high Russian immigrant population.
I live in Cleveland, Ohio and there are small communities within the city where the signs are written completely in Arabic due to the large population of immigrants in that specific area. That is common throughout the entire United States.
I’m not an American but you’re right – it has to do with number of Russian immigrants to the US – some come on the work or student visa, some win Green Card Lottery, come as refugee, many Russian women get married to the Americans. their children can speak Russian. I’m sure there’s a lot of Chinese speaking in the US – as well as Spanish-speaking.
