funny you should ask. i’m pre-law. i speak arabic (i’m egyptian), and my ex-boyfriend (govols) is russian. russian is a gorgeous language. arabic… not so much. but i think you would get a lot of use out of learning arabic. (:
oh! both!
Arabic would be a challenge.
Arabic has many more speakers and is spoken in many countries (although Russian is still very important in the former Soviet Union as a lingua franca), however with Arabic since there is such a wide variety of different and often mutually unintelligible dialects that outside of the area of the dialect that you learned that it would only be useful for reading street signs not being understood (from what I have heard). Arabic has many complex sounds and a baffling writing system, so unless you have some specific reason for learning Arabic (i.e. you have a lot of Middle Eastern clients or do business there) you might want to stick with Russian. Russian also has an alphabet that is used by many other languages and can give you the opportunity to understand better some related languages.
i guess both would be preferable but if u can’t then arabic would be preferable and the reason why arabic because there are almost 23 arab countries besides the other muslim countries almost 40 countries who are also familier with arabic, with total population of one billion..while russian is spoken in 9 or 10 countries (almost 350millions)..
Unless you are going to have direct contact with one particular part of the Arabic-speaking world, Russian is the answer.
The reason is that Arabic is a broad term for a multitude of dialects and languages. The only reason we still use the word Arabic is religion. Were it not for Islam, we would already be using different terms to distinguish between Moroccan Arabic, Levantine Arabic, etc. Because these people cannot understand eachother, they are actually using different languages. The standard Arabic usually taught, which is understood by most, is an artificial language that no one really speaks.
On the other hand, Russian is fairly uniform language with a long literary history.
I think it would be better if you learned Russian. Russia is a better and richer country and let’s say you have a client from Russia, he’ll most certainly have the resources to pay you more than an Arab client. I know this is not a strong basis but it’s one to consider.
If you have time, check out this site. It will only take you 2-3 hrs a day and you’ll learn Russian in no time. It’s easily accessible as it can be downloaded.
